Me and my Boys

The Boys

Looks like Alexander is taking really well to his new brother, Oliver. Which is a relief! He currently calls him “brudder”, which is just fine, and will take him toys and give him hugs all on his own. Hopefully this will continue!

P2 has arrived!

So, there’s a lot more on the family website about it, but I at least wanted to mention it here. Our newest family member has arrived, Oliver Jake Papaioannou. Check out his gallery here.

Flock Test

November 10th, 2005

Well, everyone else is shouting about it, so I thought I’d better check it out and see what all the fuss was about. So I’m writing this entry from within the Blog support. The nice auto discovery of my blogging software made adding this post a breeze. It would have been nice if I could have automatically added in the current URL I was looking at, or perhaps I missed that feature. So far so good.

Patch committed

Nice turn around from the CDT folks. My patch was committed to the HEAD. Sweet!

Contributing to CDT

Eclipse
For years now, one of my standard lines to folks complaining about how some particular piece of Open Source software works has been “Well, it’s Open Source, so fix it!”. And just to prove that I take my own medicine, I’ve begun to contribute (in a small way!) to CDT. My first addition has been to create a JoinLines action for the editor component. I don’t know why Eclipse doesn’t support it by default, but there ya go! I gotta say, it was pretty easy. Once I’d gotten the CDT plugins checked out and building, it only took a few hours. I found this doc a useful intro to how the Eclipse platform works. The development support in the PDE Aspect is really rather nice. I might have to re-evaluate Eclipse as a Java IDE. Certainly, I’m going to keep working through my list.

Eclipse and CDT

November 7th, 2005

In my new job I’ve had to learn C++ and C (again). It’s quite a change since I’ve been doing pretty much only Java for the last 10 yrs. Takes me back to my mispent youth! Anyway, I thought I’d take advantage of the situation to try out the CDT suite for Eclipse. I must say, it’s pretty cool. The project support is better than I expected, and you can get up and running with hardly any effort at all. It’s nice to have a fully fledged IDE that I can use for C/C++ that comes for free. It’s not all a panacea though. I miss things from other fav editors, jEdit and Intellij.
